SCN-1 are the silicon carbide nanofibers coated with thin layer of silicon dioxide to additionally protect the fibers from the environment. Fibers have 50-200 nanometers in diameter and up to several tenof microns in length. Silicon to carbon atomic ratio in fiber core is 50:50. External layer of silicon dioxide is partially amorphous. SiC nanofibers have spongy like macromorphology and pale graycolor. Bulk density is about 0.2 g/cm3. Silicon carbide in form of nanofibers is a high performance broad-band optical limiter, with similar character to multi-walled carbon nanotubes. 3-D microcrystals of SiC are not an optically active material.
